North Wood

Walking into North Wood near Driffield feels like stepping back in time - these ancient woodlands have been here for centuries, and you can sense it immediately. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days there's a proper woodland gloom to the place.

It's a straightforward affair: paths wind through the trees, and depending on which route you take, you might spend anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours exploring. The trees themselves are the main attraction - oak, beech, ash - mixed woodland that changes character as you move through it. There are quieter corners where you'll spot woodland birds and the occasional muntjac deer if you're lucky.

History buffs will appreciate that you're walking through genuine ancient woodland, but it's walkers who'll get the most from it. The paths aren't particularly challenging, making it suitable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after an hour. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and decent shoes.

Its real value lies in fitting perfectly into a broader East Yorkshire ramble. The nearby Flamborough Glamping & Vineyard and Haven Thornwick Bay Holiday Village both make good bases, and North Wood works well as a morning walk before heading towards the coast. Driffield itself is close enough that you can combine it with a town visit without faffing about with transport.
