Nabs Moor

The walk up Nabs Moor from Kendal takes you into proper fell country without feeling like you're tackling anything too gnarly. It's a moderate climb that rewards you with views across the Lakeland peaks - on a clear day you can see right across to the Scafells and beyond. Most people tackle it in under two hours round trip, which makes it ideal if you've only got an afternoon to spare.

The moorland itself is open and windswept, with rough grass and bracken underfoot. You'll pass through some woodland on the lower sections before breaking out onto the exposed summit area. It's not a technical hike - no scrambling required - but it does demand steady legs and proper footwear because the ground can be boggy even when it hasn't rained for days.

Walkers will love the accessibility of it. You don't need mountain experience or special kit, just reasonable fitness and waterproofs. History types will appreciate that you're walking through country steeped in old droving routes and shepherding paths. Families with older kids (say, ten and up) can manage it fine, though younger children might find the moorland a bit monotonous once they've got the summit photo.

It works brilliantly as a morning outing when you're staying at one of the glamping sites like Crossgate, just six miles away. Kendal itself is well positioned if you want to base yourself nearby and explore both the lower fells and the bigger peaks. Allow half a day including the walk and a breather at the top. Spring and autumn are best - summer can bring midges and crowds, winter can turn it into a proper slog.
