Mynydd Goleugell

Wind cuts across the summit plateau here with proper mountain force, even though Mynydd Goleugell only reaches a modest height. This grassy peak above Colwyn Bay delivers surprisingly good views across the Conwy valley and out to the Irish Sea on clear days. The walk up isn't particularly taxing - more of a steady plod through sheep-dotted fields than any serious scrambling.

Families with older children will manage the ascent without too much huffing, though toddlers might find it a bit much. The real reward comes at the top where you can see Snowdonia's bigger peaks lined up to the south and the coastline stretching towards Llandudno. On a good day, you might even spot Anglesey across the water.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, longer if you fancy a proper picnic at the summit. The path can get boggy after rain, so decent walking boots are worth bringing. It's free to roam, naturally - this is proper Welsh hillwalking country where access rights are well established.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Maenan Abbey Caravan Park or Wern Farm makes this an easy day out. The mountain sits conveniently between the coast and Snowdonia proper, so it works well as a gentler alternative when the higher peaks are shrouded in cloud.
