Bryn Eglwysbach

Standing at 1,073 feet above sea level, this modest peak overlooks the coastal strip between Colwyn Bay and the Conwy Valley. The climb up Bryn Eglwysbach won't trouble serious walkers - it's more of a gentle ramble than a mountain conquest - but the views from the top are properly rewarding on a clear day.

From the summit, you'll get sweeping panoramas across the Irish Sea towards Anglesey, with the Great Orme near Llandudno clearly visible to the northeast. Behind you, the higher peaks of Snowdonia create a dramatic backdrop. It's the sort of spot where you'll want to linger with a flask of tea and a sandwich.

Families with older children will find this an excellent introduction to hill walking without the commitment of a full day out. The paths are generally well-defined, though proper walking boots are advisable after wet weather. Allow two to three hours for a leisurely round trip from any of the lower car parks.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Colwyn Bay - there's a good cluster including Waenfechan Glamping & Camping and Wern Farm Caravan Park within easy reach - this makes for a cracking morning expedition before heading to the coast for the afternoon. The mountain feels properly Welsh despite its modest height, and you'll earn those fish and chips later.
