Fron-Gynnen

Standing at 401 metres above the Conwy valley, this relatively modest peak delivers views that punch well above its weight. The summit of Fron-Gynnen offers a proper panorama across the North Wales coast, with Colwyn Bay spread out below and the Irish Sea stretching to the horizon.

Walkers who fancy a decent hill climb without the full mountain commitment will find this spot hits the sweet spot. The ascent takes about an hour from the nearest parking, following well-worn paths through sheep-grazed slopes. On clear days, you can pick out Anglesey and even the Lake District peaks across the water.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of leg work will enjoy this one, though it's probably too much for toddlers. The terrain isn't technical, but proper walking boots are sensible given the often boggy Welsh hillside conditions.

Being open countryside, there are no admission fees or opening hours to worry about. Early morning visits often reward you with the clearest views before afternoon haze rolls in from the coast. The climb makes a cracking day out from any of the holiday parks dotted around Colwyn Bay, particularly Wern Farm Caravan Park or Conwy Holiday Park, both within easy driving distance of the trailhead.
