Motte Castle Mound

A steep grass mound rising abruptly from flat Cheshire farmland - that's Motte Castle Mound, one of those Norman earthworks you pass a hundred times without really noticing. Located near Shrewsbury, it's the kind of place that rewards a quick stop rather than a dedicated trip, though if you're already caravan-based at Bramblewood or Hawk Lake nearby, it's worth the short drive.

The motte itself is genuinely impressive up close. It's a proper defensive structure - that raised platform was topped with a wooden fortress centuries ago, and you can still feel the military logic of the site. The views from the top are decent enough, sweeping across the surrounding fields, though don't expect dramatic vistas.
