Red Castle

Red Castle sits just outside Shrewsbury, a proper mediaeval fortress that's survived centuries of Shropshire weather and neglect. You're looking at genuine Norman stonework here - the sort of thing that actually stops you mid-stride when you round the corner and see it properly for the first time.

It's not a full day out, to be honest. The ruins are compact, and you'll work through the site in about 45 minutes unless you're really into medieval military architecture. What makes it worthwhile is the walk itself - the approach through the grounds gives you time to understand how the castle once dominated this valley. The views back towards Shrewsbury are decent enough on a clear day.

Historians will get the most from it, particularly anyone interested in Norman defences and how castles evolved. Young kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no interactive stuff, no gift shop, no café. It's just you, the stones, and the field.

The site appears to be open access, which is typical for these smaller Shropshire ruins. No admission fee that we could track down, though you'll want to check ahead. Nearby caravan parks like Hawk Lake (barely a mile away) and Lower Lacon make it an easy stop while based in the area. If you're plotting a castle-hunting trip round Shropshire, this sits nicely between Shrewsbury town and some of the grander estates further out. Worth the detour if you're in the region, but don't reroute your whole holiday for it.
