The walk up Elysian Hill is a proper afternoon's work if you're staying near Shrewsbury, but the effort pays off once you reach the top. It's not the tallest peak in Shropshire - far from it - but the vistas across the county from up here are genuinely worth the climb.

This works best for walkers and families with older kids who won't complain about a proper climb. History enthusiasts might find the location interesting given its proximity to Shrewsbury's medieval sites, though the hill itself doesn't come with interpretation boards or visitor facilities. Bring water and decent shoes - it can be boggy after rain, and there's not much shelter once you're exposed on the slope.

If you're camped at Hawk Lake or Lower Lacon - both just a couple of miles away - this is an ideal morning or late-afternoon outing.
