Burry Walls Hillfort

The earthwork defences at Burry Walls tell you straight away this was serious business - double ramparts cutting across a hilltop near Shrewsbury, the kind of Iron Age fort that would have taken real effort to build and hold. You're looking at roughly two thousand years of history stamped into the landscape, and what makes it worth the trip is that it's genuinely quiet. Most people heading into Shropshire bypass this entirely.

Walking the perimeter takes about an hour, longer if you're the type who stops to actually think about what you're seeing. The views across the Shropshire countryside are proper good, especially on a clear day - that alone justifies the walk. The ramparts themselves are still impressive enough to read the original design, which is more than you can say for plenty of other Iron Age sites that have been flattened by centuries of ploughing.

History types and serious walkers will get the most from this. Kids under twelve might find it a bit abstract - it's earthwork archaeology, not a castle with towers. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards of any note, just you and the hillfort. That's either exactly what you want or a reason to go elsewhere.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks within a couple of miles - Hawk Lake or Springfield Riverside are closest - this makes a good morning walk before heading into Shrewsbury proper. Free to visit, naturally. The walk itself is moderate but can be muddy. Go when the ground's been dry for a day or two.
