Moreton Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees stretch overhead as you wander through this lovely woodland just outside Warwick. Moreton Wood feels properly wild - no manicured paths or visitor centres here, just honest-to-goodness forest that's been quietly doing its thing for centuries. The canopy filters sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor, creating that magical atmosphere that gets kids imagining fairy tales and adults forgetting their phones exist.

Families with energetic children will find plenty to explore, though you'll need to bring your sense of adventure rather than expecting signposted trails. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - loads of space for proper off-lead romping without worrying about traffic. The woodland changes character with the seasons: bluebells in spring, dense green tunnels in summer, and that crunch of autumn leaves underfoot that makes every step satisfying.

Being free to access (as far as I can tell), it's perfect for stretching legs between visits to Warwick Castle or Stratford-upon-Avon. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Newlands or Harbury Fields, it's an easy detour that costs nothing but time. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it - though don't expect facilities, so come prepared.
