The Bard's birthplace still draws crowds from across the globe, but step beyond the tourist hordes and you'll find a proper market town with genuine character. Yes, Anne Hathaway's Cottage gets mobbed in summer - and rightly so, it's absolutely gorgeous with those thatched roofs and cottage gardens. But the real Stratford reveals itself in quieter moments: early morning walks along the River Avon or evenings in the Old Town's timber-framed pubs.

Shakespeare's legacy dominates, obviously. The Royal Shakespeare Company's theatre complex anchors the cultural scene, while his birthplace on Henley Street remains compelling despite the crowds. What many visitors miss is the lovely countryside that surrounds the town - rolling Warwickshire hills dotted with medieval villages and ancient woodland.

Meon Hill rises to the southeast, offering cracking walks and views across the Vale of Evesham. Warren Chase Water provides peaceful fishing and birdwatching, while Meon Vale Park gives families proper space to stretch their legs. The River Avon itself is delightful - you can hire narrowboats or simply stroll the towpath to Luddington Weir.

Stratford sits perfectly placed for exploring the Heart of England. Birmingham's just 25 miles north, while the Cotswolds begin practically on the doorstep. The M40 brings London within two hours, making this a brilliant base for a proper English holiday.
