Shottery Field

A proper slice of Warwickshire wetland just outside Stratford-upon-Avon, Shottery Field is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately plan around. It's a nature reserve - flat, reedy, and genuinely good for spotting birds if you know what you're looking for. Expect shallow water, overgrown pathways, and the occasional heron if you're lucky. The walk itself won't take long. Maybe an hour if you potter about, less if you're just crossing through.

This is walkers' terrain, though not demanding walkers - more the gentle amble brigade. Birdwatchers will get the most from it, especially in winter when migrant species pass through. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're genuinely into nature spotting; it's not the sort of place with benches and information boards everywhere.

The reserve sits comfortably within striking distance of Stratford's holiday parks - Rayford Caravan Park and Dodwell Park are barely a mile away, Monks' Barn Farm only slightly further. If you're staying at one of these and fancy stretching your legs without heading into town, it's a decent option. Worth combining with a walk along the Avon or a visit to Anne Hathaway's Cottage if you're doing the Stratford tourist circuit anyway.

There's something rather lovely about finding green space this close to such a busy market town. Just go in expecting marsh rather than meadow.
