Moorland Copse

Walk into Moorland Copse and you're immediately aware of how quiet it is - no car sounds, no crowds, just the crunch of leaf litter underfoot and the occasional bird call. This pocket of woodland near Petworth is the kind of place locals know but tourists tend to miss, which rather suits it. The forest floor is thick with bracken and moss, and there's a genuine sense of being properly away from things, despite being just a short drive from civilisation.

It's excellent for walkers who want something low-key without the usual Surrey honeypot crowds. If you're the type who enjoys picking through woodland, spotting birds, or just breathing properly for an hour, you'll get real value from this. Children will find it engaging if they're into den-building or exploring - though there's nothing 'done for you' here, no way-marked trails as far as I could establish, no facilities. Bring a map or know what you're doing.

Timing-wise, allow a couple of hours wandering about, though you could easily make it shorter depending on how much you want to potter. There's no admission charge - it's simply a piece of working woodland you can access. Spring is genuinely lovely here, when the undergrowth comes alive and the light filters through properly. If you're staying at Little Cowdray Farm Glamping just down the road, this makes a proper morning's walk before heading back for a late breakfast. Worth the detour if you're in the Petworth area, though don't expect manicured trails or photo ops.
