Moffat Golf Course

The course sits on the outskirts of Moffat, a proper hill-town in Dumfries & Galloway, and it's a straightforward 18-hole layout that punches above its weight. Rolling fairways with decent views across the Southern Uplands - nothing flashy, but the kind of place where you can actually focus on your game rather than gawping at scenery.

This is squarely for golfers, obviously. Duffers will find it manageable enough; low handicappers might find it a touch forgiving. The course doesn't require a membership to play, though you'll need to ring ahead or check their website for rates and availability. Allow three and a half hours, maybe four if it's busy.

What makes it work as part of a caravan holiday is the proximity to Moffat itself - you've got the Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site just under a mile away, or Howslack Farm and Riverside Holiday Park within easy driving distance. So you can knock a round in the morning, grab lunch in town, then head back to your pitch. It's not a destination in itself, but it's the kind of reliable local course that makes a week in the area properly rounded rather than just hiking and chip suppers.

Best visited when the weather's settled - Scottish courses in winter can be a slog. Spring through autumn is your window.
