Moel y Garnedd

The walk up Moel y Garnedd isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. Starting from near Bala, you climb through rough moorland with the Aran range keeping you company to the east. The summit sits at 2,231 feet and the view across to Cader Idris on a clear day is genuinely good - not show-stopping, but solid Welsh mountain scenery.

It's a proper fell rather than a dramatic peak, so don't expect Alpine drama. What you get instead is honest walking country. The paths are rough and can be boggy after rain, which is most of the time in Gwynedd. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how much time you want to spend at the top.

Walkers will get on with this fine. It's a straightforward fell walk without scrambles or technical bits, so families with decent boots and some outdoor experience will manage it. Young kids might find it a bit of a slog with nothing particularly exciting to break up the moorland stretch.

Free to access - it's open access land. The nearest proper facilities are in Bala itself, about 20 minutes' drive away. If you're staying at Tyn Cornel Camping nearby, this works well as a morning or afternoon outing to stretch your legs properly without committing to a full day's expedition. Worth doing if you're in the area, but not a reason to plan a trip around.
