Moel y Calch

The walk up Moel y Calch rewards you with proper views across the Bala area - nothing flashy, but the kind of ridge walk where you feel like you've earned your vantage point. The peak itself sits at a decent height without being knackering, making it a solid half-day out for anyone based around Bala.

From the summit you're looking out over Penllyn valley and the Lake Bala basin beyond. On a clear day it's worth the slog; on a grey one, less so. The route involves a steady ascent through moorland - no technical bits, just consistent climbing that'll have your calves working. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

This works well if you're camped at Tyn Cornel just down the road. The walk itself is straightforward enough for families with older kids who don't mind a proper climb, though younger ones might find the featureless moorland a bit dull halfway up. Walkers after genuine solitude will appreciate it - you won't be queuing for photos here.

No facilities at the peak, so bring water and something to eat if you're making an afternoon of it. The best approach is from the Bala side, starting early to catch the light properly. It's the kind of walk that works perfectly as part of a wider exploration of the Snowdonia foothills rather than a destination in itself.
