Moel Lefn

The walk up Moel Lefn from Beddgelert is a proper little gem if you want something achievable without needing a guide or specialist kit. It's not a massive undertaking - the peak itself sits at 638 metres, so perfectly manageable for fit families or anyone comfortable on steep ground. The real draw is the view across the Snowdonia valleys once you're up there. On a clear day, you genuinely get a sense of how the landscape fits together rather than just staring at one mountain.

The route isn't well-signposted, which is either annoying or part of the appeal depending on your mood. Most people start from near Beddgelert village and head up through woodland before the terrain opens out. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're not dawdling. It's steep in places - genuinely steep - so wouldn't suit young children or anyone unsure on their feet.

What makes it worth doing is the relative quiet. Snowdon gets rammed with tourists, but Moel Lefn sees a fraction of that. You'll have space to actually breathe and sit about without fighting for a flat rock. If you're staying at one of the local campsites - Beddgelert Campsite is barely a mile away, with Cae Du and Talymignedd both within three - it's a natural morning's work before heading elsewhere. Free to access, naturally. Go when the weather's settled; the cloud rolls in quick up here and there's not much shelter once you're exposed.
