Milton Plantation

Walk into Milton Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth woodland - the kind of place where the light filters through in dusty shafts and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest near Moffat, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor centres; this is the real thing, with conifer plantations mixed in alongside native broadleaf trees that give the whole place a bit of character. The woodland floor is thick with needles and moss, and on a damp day - which, let's be honest, is most days in Dumfries & Galloway - there's something quite atmospheric about it all.

Clear your head here rather than tick boxes. The walking is straightforward enough, with established routes that won't require map-reading skills, though the terrain gets boggy in places after rain. Bring proper boots. You'll see the occasional deer if you're lucky, and birdwatchers do genuinely rate it. Allow two to three hours for a decent wander. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, though the place operates on the quiet side - no website, no visitor infrastructure - so treat it with respect and don't leave litter.

If you're based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Howslack Farm just up the road, this makes an excellent half-day walk to blow out the cobwebs between lazy mornings and pub suppers. It's not spectacular enough to warrant a special trip on its own, but it's genuinely good woodland if you're already in the area.
