Milton of Tassieholm Roman Fortlet

You'll find yourself standing in a field near Moffat looking at what amounts to a grassy outline - that's Milton of Tassieholm Roman Fortlet in its current state. It's a scheduled monument, which means it's legally protected, but what you're actually gazing at is the earthwork remains of a small Roman military installation from around the 2nd century AD. The fort itself is long gone, but the banks and ditches that once formed its defences are still visible if you know what you're looking at.

Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will find this worthwhile, particularly those interested in the Roman military's reach into Scotland. The site sits on the route of the Clovenford-Raeburnfoot road and would have been a supply post on the northernmost frontier of the empire.
