Mill Stone Hill

Mill Stone Hill rises sharply from the rolling moorland around Leyburn, offering one of the sharpest ascents in the Yorkshire Dales if you're after proper views without the full fell-walking commitment. The walk itself is steep - no point pretending otherwise - but it's short enough that you'll be at the trig point within twenty minutes or so from the nearest parking. The reward is a cracking 360-degree panorama across Wensleydale and beyond. This is less a tourist attraction and more a genuine hill walkers' spot. Families with older kids will find it manageable; younger ones might find the gradient punishing. The summit itself is modest but the views justify the climb. I'd allow two hours total if you're taking it leisurely, which you can - there's something satisfying about a quick burst of elevation gain and being back down for lunch.

It works perfectly into a Dales holiday based at somewhere like Stablefell Holidays and Campsite just down the road. Use it as a morning warm-up before exploring the valley floor, or tackle it on a day when the weather's too iffy for longer moorland traverses. Free to access, naturally - you just rock up and walk. Best avoided during heavy rain when the path gets slick, but otherwise it's reliable. The kind of hill that locals do regularly and visitors overlook, which is precisely why it's worth your time.
