Middle Black Clough Waterfall

Water cascades down dark gritstone in a proper moorland setting, and that's Middle Black Clough Waterfall in a nutshell. It's not Niagara, but it doesn't pretend to be - this is a Yorkshire moorland brook doing what moorland brooks do best, tumbling over rocks in a place that feels genuinely remote despite being within easy reach of Holmfirth.

The walk to get there is the real draw. You're tramping through heather and rough grass, following the water upstream, and the further you go the more the everyday world falls away. The fall itself isn't dramatic - maybe 20 feet or so - but it sits in a steep-sided clough with enough character to make the trip worthwhile. Worth allowing a good two hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and how much time you spend picking your way across the rocks.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Bring decent boots and don't come expecting facilities - there's nothing at the site itself. Go when it's been raining; a dry spell and there's barely enough water to call it a waterfall. Families with young children might find the terrain a bit much, and the rocky descent requires care.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Whitegate, Thurlmoor Farm, or any of the spots dotted around the five-mile radius - this makes a solid half-day outing. Pair it with a walk across Stanage Edge or a proper afternoon in Holmfirth proper, and you've got yourself a decent day. It's not the sort of place you drive hours for on its own, but if you're already in the Pennines, you'd be daft to miss it.
