Martholme Viaduct

You can walk right up to this massive stone viaduct and feel properly small. Martholme Viaduct spans the River Ribble near Clitheroe, a railway bridge built in the 1880s that still carries trains across nine soaring arches. It's Victorian engineering at its most confident - red sandstone, absolutely solid, and genuinely impressive when you're standing beneath it.

Walkers get the most from this spot. There's a decent riverside path that runs underneath, so you can approach from below and get the full effect of those arches towering overhead. The walk from Clitheroe takes about 45 minutes each way along fairly easy terrain. Time it right and you'll feel the rumble as a train passes - that's the experience worth having.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the craftsmanship. This isn't some delicate Victorian folly; it's a working bridge that's done its job for 140 years without fuss. If you're camped at Pendle View Holiday Park or one of the other sites within a few miles of Clitheroe, it makes a straightforward half-day outing.

Don't expect queues or facilities. There's no visitor centre, no admission charge, just the viaduct doing what it was built for. On a clear day the Ribble Valley setting is lovely, and if you time it for when the light hits the sandstone late afternoon, you'll get photographs worth taking. The walk beats just driving past.
