Marble Quarry Hill

The walk up Marble Quarry Hill, just outside Settle, is one of those Yorkshire climbs that feels properly rewarding without being unnecessarily brutal. The quarry itself - long since abandoned - sits at the summit, and the views across Ribblesdale are the real draw here. You're looking at a steady climb through moorland with limestone underfoot, the kind of terrain that tells you exactly what this landscape is made from.

It takes most people around an hour to reach the top, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The quarry workings are genuinely interesting if you like industrial history - you can still see the old extraction marks in the rock face. Walkers will get the most from this one, particularly those doing the broader Settle circuit. It's not a destination for lounging about, but the views justify the effort.

The nearest town is Settle itself, which is useful for supplies and a decent café afterwards. If you're staying at Ribblesdale Pods just down the road - genuinely lovely glamping spots - you could knock this out in an afternoon without much fuss. The other campsites like Philpin Farm and Dalesbridge are workable bases too, though slightly further out.

Free to walk, obviously. Go on a clear day or don't bother - the views in cloud are fairly grim. Spring and autumn work best; summer weekends bring crowds to the area, and winter can be slippery underfoot.
