Maol Mor

The walk up Maol Mor from Arrochar is steep, unforgiving, and absolutely worth doing if you've got a clear day and decent fitness. This isn't a gentle stroll - you're climbing nearly 900 metres of Argyll moorland, and the path doesn't take prisoners. What you get at the top, though, is a proper panorama across Loch Lomond and the surrounding peaks. On a good day the views stretch far enough to make the huffing and puffing fade from memory.

Most people tackle it as part of the Arrochar Alps circuit, which makes sense - you're already in the area and the peaks cluster together nicely. Solo walkers and experienced hill types will find genuine challenge here, but it's not one for young kids or anyone after a casual afternoon ramble. Three to four hours return is realistic, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit.

Timing matters. Early morning gives you the best light and avoids the crowds that build on decent weekends. Spring through autumn works fine, though winter demands proper preparation. If you're camping nearby - Beinglas Campsite is only 5.5 miles away - you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the afternoon free. Loch Lomond Holiday Park sits closer at 3.9 miles if you're after more facilities. Either way, this peak rewards effort properly.
