Cruach Tairbeirt

The walk up Cruach Tairbeirt from Arrochar takes you straight into proper hill country - nothing fancy, just a solid ascent through mixed woodland that opens onto moorland. It's one of those peaks that doesn't look like much from the car park, but rewards you with genuinely impressive views across Loch Long to Ben Arthur once you've put in the legwork.

This is absolutely a walkers' hill. The path is well-trodden and manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, though it's steep in sections and the final approach can be boggy depending on weather. Allow two to three hours there and back, and wear decent boots - trainers will frustrate you. The summit itself sits at around 900 metres, giving you that satisfying sense of achievement without needing ropes or special kit.

Families with older kids who like being outdoors will get on with it fine. Younger children might find it dull if they're not into hills. The views are the real draw rather than any dramatic scrambling or technical interest, so it's decent for photography.

If you're basing yourself at Loch Lomond Holiday Park or Forest Holidays Ardgartan nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing - close enough that you're not spending an hour driving, far enough that it feels like a proper expedition. The whole area around Arrochar is cracking for walking, so you could easily pair it with other routes. It's free, naturally, since it's just a Scottish hill.
