Ben Vorlich

The walk up Ben Vorlich from Arrochar is proper steep, but the views across Loch Long and into the Trossachs make it entirely worth the graft. It's one of those Scottish peaks that looks like it's been chiselled from the landscape - sharp, dramatic, and far more imposing than its 943 metres height suggests. Most people tackle it as a day walk from the village car park, allowing roughly four to five hours for the round trip depending on fitness. The path climbs relentlessly through woodland before opening onto moorland, and the last stretch to the summit demands proper scrambling.

This is for walkers with some experience and decent legs, not a casual family stroll. Children over ten might manage it, but there's nothing to keep them entertained once you're up there except the panorama - which, granted, is exceptional. Go early on a clear day. The weather rolls in fast across these hills, and there's no shelter once you're exposed. Late spring through early autumn is your window - winter conditions here can be treacherous for a hill of this reputation.
