Luscombe Chapel

Tucked away in the Devon countryside near Dawlish, this small medieval chapel sits quietly in its own grounds, largely forgotten by most tourists racing towards the coast. The stone building dates back several centuries and retains much of its original character, though finding it open can be hit and miss - there's no regular opening schedule that I could pin down.

What strikes you first is the complete silence. No traffic noise, no crowds, just birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves. The chapel itself is fairly modest - don't expect grand architecture or elaborate decorations. It's more about the atmosphere than the spectacle.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval stonework and the sense of stepping back in time, though families with young children might find it a bit too quiet for their liking. There's not much to actively do here beyond a gentle wander and perhaps a moment of reflection.

Getting there requires a short walk from the nearest parking spot, so it's not the most accessible attraction if mobility is a concern. The surrounding area is lovely for a peaceful stroll though.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Dawlish - Lady's Mile or Golden Sands are both within a couple of miles - it makes for a pleasant half-hour detour when you fancy escaping the seaside bustle. Just don't make it your main destination for the day.
