Buntings conservation area

The conservation area at Buntings, just outside Dawlish, is a proper bit of coastal Devon that hasn't been hammered by day-trippers yet. It's a mix of grassland, scrubby vegetation, and patches of woodland running down toward the seafront - the sort of place where you'll actually spot birds rather than just hear them mentioned on a visitor board.

This is one for walkers and nature types rather than families after a theme park afternoon. The paths wind through quietly, and if you're into spotting warblers, finches, or the occasional raptor, you'll have a decent time. There's something genuinely peaceful about it, especially off-season. Don't expect manicured gardens or visitor facilities - it's raw enough that you feel you're actually outdoors.

If you're staying at Lady's Mile or Golden Sands - both practically on the doorstep - you could easily walk here in less than an hour. Dawlish Sands and Cofton Holidays are also close enough for a morning visit before heading to the beach proper. Most of the area is accessible without charge, though it's worth checking locally whether any specific sections require permits.

Allow two or three hours if you want to make a proper go of it, wandering the full network. Go early in the morning when the wildlife is most active, and bring binoculars if you're keen on birds. It won't wow everyone, but if you've had enough of amusement arcades and want to remember why you came to Devon in the first place, it's worth the walk.
