Coryton Cove

The cliffs at Coryton Cove rise sharply from the shingle beach just outside Dawlish, offering one of those proper Devon coastal views that actually justifies the postcard hype. Red sandstone faces drop straight down to the water's edge - it's dramatic without being Alpine about it, and the colour changes depending on the light and tide. This is a working stretch of coastline rather than a manicured tourist spot, which means it feels authentic.

You get here by walking down from the coastal path above or picking your way across the shingle from either direction. The beach itself is small and functional - good for a paddle or a sit-down with a flask, less useful if you've got young kids who need space to run. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour here, taking photographs and watching the waves work at the rocks. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though winter storms make it genuinely dramatic if you don't mind the wind.

Walkers on the South West Coast Path will pass through naturally. If you're staying at Lady's Mile or Leadstone Camping just down the road, it's an easy morning wander. The surrounding stretch between Dawlish town and the cove is riddled with smaller beaches and rock formations - Coryton is the highlight, but you're never far from something worth looking at. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Go for the geology, the sea views, and the reminder that Devon's coastline hasn't been smoothed down by tourism everywhere.
