Lose Hill

The walk up Lose Hill is deceptive. From Hope Valley it looks modest enough - a rounded limestone peak that doesn't announce itself loudly against the surrounding Derbyshire moorland. But the climb itself rewards effort with views that stretch across the White Peak in all directions, and the summit cairn sits at 476 metres with enough space to sit and actually enjoy the panorama rather than immediately turning back.

It's a proper fell walk, not a gentle ramble. The route from Castleton takes around ninety minutes to the top if you're steady on your legs, and the descent is steep enough to test your knees on the way down. The terrain is rocky in patches and boggy in others depending on recent rainfall - proper hiking boots matter here, trainers won't cut it.

Walkers will find this their sort of thing entirely. Families with young children might struggle with the gradient and the exposure in places, though determined kids have certainly done it. The views alone make the sweat worthwhile - Mam Tor looms nearby, and on clear days you can see right across towards Kinder Scout.

There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities at the summit - it's entirely free and entirely wild, which is exactly why it's worth doing. Combine it with nearby Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite if you're staying locally, and you've got a proper Peak District day sorted. Go early to avoid the afternoon crowds, and don't underestimate how quickly the weather can turn up here.
