Eldon Hill

The walk up Eldon Hill rewards you with proper views across the Hope Valley - assuming the cloud has lifted. It's not a long haul from the nearby caravan parks clustered around Castleton, which makes it decent for a morning's leg-stretch, though I wouldn't bank on it as your day's main event.

The peak itself rises to 1,289 metres, and the path up is straightforward enough without being boring. You get a mix of moorland and rocky sections, with the stone workings visible as you climb - there's old lead and fluorspar mining history baked into these hills. On a clear day, the Pennines roll out around you. On a grey day, which let's be honest happens frequently in Derbyshire, you're basically hiking through cloud.

This suits walkers more than families with young kids. Teenagers with decent boots will manage it fine, but it's not the sort of place you'll find an ice cream van or a play park at the top. Allow ninety minutes if you're moving steadily from the main approach near Hope.

Coupled with the nearby high peaks - Mam Tor and Lose Hill are within striking distance - it works well as part of a broader walking fortnight. Stay at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and you're positioned to tackle several peaks in the area. Free to access, naturally. No visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. Bring your own water.
