P3 [Gauries Hole]

The entrance to Gauries Hole sits tucked into the limestone hillside above Hope Valley, and honestly, it's more of a geological curiosity than a full day out. You're looking at a cave system that's modest by Peak District standards - nothing like the grand show caves at Castleton down the road. The opening is fairly accessible if you're prepared for some scrambling over loose stone, though the actual chamber is shallow and the whole experience takes perhaps twenty minutes, tops.

It's genuinely interesting if you're into karst geology or you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is barely three miles away - and want to add a quick ramble to your day. Walkers combining it with the broader valley trails will get more value than families hoping for caves to explore. The surrounding hillside offers better views than the interior does, which tells you something.

There's no admission charge as far as we could find, and no set opening hours either - it's essentially open access. Wear decent boots. The limestone can be sharp underfoot, and the ground gets muddy without warning. Best visited on a dry day when the approach path isn't a stream. If you're basing yourself at Derbyshire Hills Campsite or Beech Croft Farm further up the valley, slot this in as a forty-minute detour rather than a main attraction. It's worth seeing once, but don't reorganise your itinerary around it.
