Long Plantation

Long Plantation is a proper working forest tucked inland from Scarborough, the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. What you get here is woodland walking through established coniferous forest - it's dark, cool, and quiet even when the coast is rammed with families. The trees are tall and close together, which means the light never quite reaches the forest floor properly. There are paths threading through, some better maintained than others.

The main appeal is straightforward: if you're camping or glamping nearby at Whorlton Pods, Lahtle Wood, or one of the other sites dotted around North Yorkshire, this beats a crowded beach for a morning walk. It's the kind of place where kids might spot a pheasant or hear woodpeckers if they're lucky, but don't expect dramatic views or visitor facilities. There's no café, no car park to speak of, no admission desk.

Walkers get the most from Long Plantation - those after a proper woodland ramble rather than a quick stroll. The forest absorbs noise brilliantly, so it feels properly isolated even though Scarborough's only a few miles away. Allow an hour or two depending on how much you want to explore the different trails.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are best - summer can feel claustrophobic when the canopy's fully leafed, and winter makes the paths a bit boggy. It's free to access, which means the forest works well as a half-day add-on if you're basing yourself at Haven Blue Dolphin or Centenary Way further afield. Worth the detour if you need a proper break from the seaside.
