Lochan na H-Airigh

A small, seriously underrated loch about 5 miles from Oban that most visitors completely miss. Lochan na H-Airigh sits quietly in the Argyll landscape, offering genuine peace rather than the crowded Loch Lomond circuit you get further south. The water is dark and still, ringed by low hills - nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point.

What you're doing here is walking. The loch itself isn't somewhere you visit for 20 minutes and leave. You need to get out on foot around the shores to appreciate it properly, and the views improve the further you push on. The surrounding terrain is open moorland and rough grassland, so decent boots matter. On a clear day you can see across to Ben Cruachan, which does add something. On a grey day - and there will be grey days - it's moody and atmospheric instead, which honestly suits it better.

Walkers should give this a solid two to three hours. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on the attractions front, though teenagers keen on wild swimming could do worse. The loch is accessible and genuinely cold enough to feel brave. Free to visit, obviously - there's no infrastructure, no cafe, no visitor centre nonsense.

If you're staying at Argyll Kayaker Cove or Oban Holiday Park, this is exactly the sort of morning sortie that justifies being based here. It slots perfectly between the bigger attractions and the endless rainy-day pub runs. Worth the detour, especially if you're after something that doesn't feel like everyone else's Scotland holiday.
