Loch na Cruaich

Drive inland from Oban toward the Highlands and you'll find Loch na Cruaich tucked into proper wild country. It's a small freshwater loch - the kind of place that doesn't shout about itself, which is exactly why it's worth seeking out.

What you get here is straightforward: water, mountains, and silence. The shoreline offers several pull-ins where you can park and walk, and the views across to the surrounding peaks shift depending on light and weather. On a clear day it's genuinely lovely. On a moody grey morning - which is half the time in Argyll - it's atmospheric in a way those glossy postcards never capture.

This is walkers' territory more than anything else. The loch itself rewards a gentle circuit if you've got the legs for it, and the paths aren't overly signposted, which keeps the crowds down. Families with younger kids might find it a bit exposed and empty - there's nowhere to grab a drink or an ice cream, and honestly, an hour or so here is probably enough unless you're serious about hiking the surrounding peaks.

Stay at either Argyll Kayaker Cove or Sunnybrae Holiday Park - both are within 4.5 miles - and use this loch as part of a wider day exploring the Oban area. It works well as a morning stop before heading to busier attractions, or as a quieter afternoon escape when you want to drop the pace. Don't go out of your way unless you're already in the region, but if you are, it's worth the diversion.
