Llyn y Gader

The walk up to Llyn y Gader rewards you with a proper mountain lake, cradled high in the Cader Idris range above Dolgellau. It's not a stroll - you're climbing into the uplands here, but the path is well-trodden and the effort pays off when you finally see the water spread out below the peaks.

The lake itself sits in a glacial cirque, surrounded by steep slopes that make for dramatic scenery. On a clear day the views back towards the valleys are worth every breath. Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding - it's the kind of destination that feels earned, not just looked at from a car park. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike will get something real from it, though younger legs might struggle with the gradient.

You'll need a few hours to do this justice - allow three to four hours return, depending on fitness. Go early if you can, especially in summer when the car parks fill quickly. The weather can turn fast at this elevation, so check conditions before heading out.
