Little King's Tor

The walk up Little King's Tor rewards you with views that make the climb worthwhile. It's a modest peak by Dartmoor standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping for breath - but that's rather the point. The tor itself is a granite outcrop, the kind that juts out suddenly from moorland scrub and gives you something proper to aim for when you're walking the hills around Tavistock.

From the top, the views across Dartmoor unfold in every direction. On a clear day you can pick out other tors dotting the landscape, and the moorland rolls away in that characteristic purple-brown way that makes Devon's high ground so distinct. The climb takes roughly thirty to forty minutes depending on your pace and fitness, so it's neither a gruelling slog nor a five-minute stroll.

Walkers will get the most from Little King's Tor. It works brilliantly as part of a longer loop through the moor, or as a half-day objective if you're based at Langstone Manor Holiday Park nearby. Families with older children won't find it taxing. Younger kids might struggle with the uneven terrain - there's no formal path, just moorland - so consider their legs before you set out.

The access is free and there are no facilities on the tor itself, so bring water. Late afternoon light here is exceptional if you can time it right. It's the sort of walk that feels like proper Dartmoor without needing to trek for hours.
