Littaford Tor

The walk up Littaford Tor rewards you with proper views across Dartmoor - moorland rolling away in every direction, and on a clear day you can pick out the hills beyond. It's not a particularly demanding climb from Tavistock, and the tor itself stands maybe 400 metres or so, but that height gain matters when you're crossing open moorland. The rocky summit is the kind of place where you'll want to stop for a bit, not just snap a photo and leave.

Walkers will find this genuinely worth the effort. It's the sort of walk that takes three or four hours including a proper lunch break at the top, and it works equally well as a solo adventure or with a group who aren't bothered about having to chat while they hike. Families with older kids will manage it fine - younger ones might struggle with the uneven ground and the exposure, but there's nothing technically tricky about it.

The moorland landscape feels quite wild even though civilisation isn't far away. Tavistock sits close enough that you could do this as a half-day outing, maybe grab a pasty on your way back into town. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Langstone Manor or based somewhere in Dartmoor National Park itself, this makes an obvious addition to your itinerary. Go when the weather's settled - moorland clouds roll in quickly, and visibility matters up there. Free to visit, obviously. Just wear proper boots and check the forecast first.
