Lewsey Park

The wetland walk at Lewsey Park, just outside Dunstable, is one of those places that surprises you. You turn up expecting a modest local reserve and find yourself surrounded by proper wildlife - reed warblers, water voles if you're lucky, and on a still morning, enough birdlife to keep a pair of binoculars well-earned.

It's a flat, easy loop through reed beds and open water, which means families with younger kids won't struggle, but don't expect dramatic scenery. The appeal is entirely in what lives here rather than how it looks. Spring's the best time - March through May - when migrating birds stop off and the reeds are fresh. Summer can feel a bit overgrown, and honestly, winter's quieter if you prefer fewer other walkers.

Allow two hours maximum, or you can do a quick 45-minute circuit if time's tight. The paths are well-trodden and mostly dry underfoot, though waterproof boots aren't a bad idea after rain.

If you're based at Merlin Farm Camping near Whipsnade, this is a decent morning outing before heading to the zoo itself. It works well paired with a wander around Dunstable's town centre too, though the park is genuinely the main attraction here. Woodlands Caravan Site is a bit further out, but still within easy striking distance for a day trip.

Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water and a packed snack. It's not flashy, but if you're into birds or just want a proper East Anglian wetland experience without driving to Norfolk, it does the job.
