Lesbury, Alnmouth, Longhoughton, Howick & Boulmer Vicarage

This isn't one church but five - a proper ecclesiastical dotted line across the Northumberland coast between Alnwick and the North Sea. Each one tells a different story, from medieval to Victorian, and they're scattered across villages that feel genuinely removed from the tourist trail.

Lesbury's the main draw, a solid Norman structure with a decent chancel and the kind of quiet churchyard where you could actually hear yourself think. Longhoughton sits inland a bit, while Howick and Boulmer are closer to the coast - windswept parishes where the sea gets a mention in the sermons. Alnmouth's church sits right where the Aln meets the coast, which is worth seeing just for the setting.

You'll need a car to do all five properly. Each one's only a ten-minute drive from the next, so you could tackle them as a cluster in an afternoon rather than a dedicated pilgrimage. Walkers might pick two or three and string them together with a coastal walk instead. They're not Instagram moments, but if you're into parish churches, local history, or just wandering through village graveyards looking at dates and names, this stretch rewards that kind of attention.
