Getting to the top of this 1,203-foot fell near Keswick takes about an hour of steady walking, and the views over Derwentwater are absolutely cracking. The path starts from behind the railway station and winds up through woodland before opening onto the grassy summit - it's one of the easier climbs in the Lake District, making it proper popular with families.

Wainwright devotees will know this as one of the 214 peaks in his famous guides, though it's hardly the most challenging. What makes Latrigg worth the effort is the spectacular panorama once you reach the top. On a clear day you'll see Skiddaw looming to the north, while Derwentwater stretches out below like a mirror.

Families with older children (say, eight and up) will manage the walk fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections. The descent can be slippery when wet, so decent walking boots are essential. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want time to enjoy the summit properly.
