Banner Rigg

Rising 380 metres above Windermere, Banner Rigg delivers one of the more accessible fell walks in the southern Lakes without the crowds that plague Orrest Head. The steady climb from Windermere town takes about 45 minutes through mixed woodland before opening onto heather moorland near the summit.

Families with older children will manage this comfortably - it's steep in places but nothing too challenging for anyone reasonably fit. The reward is a proper panoramic view across Windermere's full length, with the Langdale Pikes visible on clear days. Come early morning or late afternoon when the light catches the water just right.

What makes Banner Rigg particularly appealing is its relative quiet. While the famous viewpoints get mobbed in summer, you'll often have this spot largely to yourself. The path can be muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential rather than trainers.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like White Cross Bay or Fallbarrow makes this an ideal morning expedition before the day gets too warm. Allow two hours for the round trip, including time to actually appreciate the view rather than just snap a selfie and leg it back down.
