About The Howe

Rising 1,550 feet above Windermere, this modest fell offers one of the most rewarding short walks in the southern Lakes. The summit provides proper views across England's longest natural lake, with the Langdale Pikes forming a dramatic backdrop to the west.

Walkers will find the ascent from Ambleside fairly gentle, following well-marked paths through mixed woodland before emerging onto open fellside. It's a cracking choice for families with older children - steep enough to feel like an achievement but not so demanding that anyone gets properly knackered. Allow two to three hours for the round trip.

From the top, you can pick out the steamers chugging between Ambleside and Lakeside, while Blackwell arts and crafts house sits like a white dot on the eastern shore. The view takes in much of Windermere's length, making it well worth the climb on clear days.

This peak works brilliantly as part of a Lake District holiday based at nearby parks like Limefitt or White Cross Bay. Both sit within easy reach of the trailhead, and after a morning's walking, you'll appreciate having facilities close by. The fell can get busy during summer weekends, so early starts pay dividends if you want the summit to yourself.
