Mickle Moss

Standing at 432 metres, this modest fell offers one of the finest views over Windermere you'll get without the crowds that mob the bigger peaks. The summit sits just south of the lake's main body, giving you a proper birds-eye perspective of England's largest natural water.

Walkers with a decent level of fitness will find the ascent rewarding rather than punishing. The path winds through typical Lakeland terrain - bracken, scattered woodland, and the odd stone wall to clamber over. It's not technically challenging, but you'll need proper walking boots as the ground can be boggy after rain.

From the top, Windermere stretches out like a blue ribbon, with the central fells rising beyond. On clear days you can pick out Helvellyn and the Langdale Pikes in the distance. The view alone justifies the effort, particularly if you time it for late afternoon when the light catches the water just right.

Families with teenagers who enjoy a proper walk will love this. Younger children might find it a bit much - allow three to four hours for the round trip from Windermere town. It's free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though winter conditions require extra care.
