Wansfell (Baystones)

Standing atop this modest fell above Windermere, you'll understand why locals rate it so highly despite its relatively humble 1,581-foot summit. Wansfell Pike delivers proper Lake District views without the slog of the bigger mountains - Windermere stretches out below while the Langdale Pikes rise dramatically to the west.

The walk up from Ambleside takes about an hour each way along well-maintained paths, though it's steep enough to get your heart pumping. Families with older children (say 8+) will manage fine, but this isn't pushchair territory. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers 360-degree views that include Helvellyn, the Coniston Fells, and on clear days, a glimpse of Morecambe Bay.
