About Knockchree

The walk up Knockchree isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind your legs why they came to the Mourne Mountains in the first place. This 570-metre peak sits just outside Newry and gives you proper views across County Down and into the Mourne range proper - on a clear day you can see right across to the Irish Sea. It's a straightforward hike, maybe 90 minutes up and down if you're not dawdling, making it ideal for families who want the achievement of a summit without committing to a full day's trek. The ground underfoot is rough in places, bog in others, so decent boots matter. You won't find facilities at the top - bring water and snacks with you. Knockchree works brilliantly as a shorter outing if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Cranfield or Kilbroney, especially if you've got restless teenagers. The views alone justify the effort, though it's not one of the Mournes' showstopper peaks like Slieve Donard. Go early if you can. The mountain gets busy on weekends, and afternoon mist can roll in quickly even when the valley looks clear. Best visited April through October when the weather's more forgiving and the daylight gives you proper time to explore the ridgeline. Free to walk, naturally - it's open access across these hills.
