Carn Mountain North Top

The walk up Carn Mountain's North Top rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb worthwhile - on a clear day you're looking across the Mourne range with Newry spread out below. It's accessible enough for anyone with reasonable fitness, though the path can be boggy and the wind up top is often fiercer than you'd expect.

This isn't a technical climb. Most people do it as part of a broader Mourne circuit or as a standalone peak, depending on how much time you've got. Count on an hour and a half up and back if you're moving steadily. The real appeal is that it's less hammered than some of the bigger names around here - you won't be queuing for space at the summit.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with older kids can manage it fine, but younger ones might find the exposed ridge sections a bit much. The boggy sections are genuinely boggy, so proper boots matter.

There's no charge to climb - this is open access walking. If you're camping at Oakwood Glamping or The Rock nearby, it's practically on your doorstep at around three miles away. Even from Tollymore Campsite at five miles out, it's worth the drive rather than choosing something closer. The Mourne Mountains are brilliant for a week's holiday - stack this climb alongside days at Tollymore Forest Park itself and you've got a solid itinerary without needing to range far from Newry.
