Wee Binnian

Wee Binnian sits at 1,450 feet in the Mourne Mountains, just south of Newry, and it's a proper little mountain that punches above its weight. The walk up takes roughly an hour from the car park, following a well-trodden path through moorland with views that just keep opening up as you climb. You get the full sweep of the Mournes from up here - Slieve Donard looming larger to the west, the granite peaks stacked like a giant's teeth across the horizon. On a clear day you can see across to the Cooley Peninsula in the Republic.

This is one for walkers who want the reward without the full slog of a four-hour expedition. It's steep in places but nothing technical, and families with capable kids aged eight and up will manage it fine. The view from the summit is the whole point - stand there with a flask of tea and you'll understand why people keep coming back to these mountains.

Wee Binnian is free to access as part of the open moorland, and there's no formal opening hours to worry about. Most folk allow two to three hours return. The mountain works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Oakwood or Willowtree, both within three miles. Combine it with Bloody Bridge Campsite's lower walks or Annalong Holiday Park as a base, and you've got a proper Mourne Mountains escape without needing to commit to the big hitters. Come early on weekends - the car park fills up quickly.
