Spaltha

Spaltha sits on the quieter edge of the Mourne Mountains, a proper hill walk rather than a full alpine expedition. At around 619 metres, it's not the highest peak in the range - that honour goes to Slieve Donard - but it offers something the bigger mountains don't: relative peace and decent views without the crowds.

The walk itself takes most people between two and three hours return, depending on your fitness and which route you take from Newry. You'll climb through moorland and rough grass, with the kind of big skies that make you remember why you left the city. The summit isn't dramatic - no dramatic crag or neat cairn to photograph - but the panorama across the Mournes and down towards Newry justifies the effort.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and families with young kids might find it a slog, though determined ten-year-olds could manage it. The ground can be boggy in wet weather, so proper boots aren't optional.

Stay at one of the nearby camping spots - Tollymore Campsite or Camping Tollymore Forest Park are both within five miles - and you can tackle Spaltha as part of a longer mountain weekend. Pair it with Slieve Donard or the Brandy Pad walk to justify the journey. Free to climb, naturally. Go when the weather's decent; the Mournes can turn murky fast, and there's no shelter once you're up.
