Slievenamuck is a proper hill walk rather than a summit that'll take your breath away - and I mean that as a compliment. From Newry, it's an accessible peak in the Mourne foothills that rewards you with solid views across the surrounding countryside without requiring serious mountaineering skills.

The walk itself is straightforward enough. You're looking at grassland paths and moorland, with the kind of terrain that's fine in decent weather but can turn boggy after rain. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace. It's the sort of walk that families with older kids will manage comfortably, though you'll want proper footwear - this isn't a riverside stroll.

What makes it worthwhile is the positioning. You get sight lines towards the proper Mourne peaks to the south, which is useful if you're deciding which bigger hills to tackle.
